Well, these two pictures below seem to show that they can....
But, as im sure you know, Newts are silent creatures, and this is just a yawn as this chappy stretches out his jaw muscles.
IN this photo below you can see why they are also called "Fire-Bellied Newts"
From above they are all lumpy and brown, but from below the bright red and orange markings are a display that they have a defensive poison that they can exude from their skin glands.
Unlike other members of the family Salamandridae, newts are semiaquatic, alternating between aquatic and terrestrial habitats over the year, sometimes even staying in the water full-time.
