The brown shrike
The brown shrike. This pretty bird was in LNEC last week, perched nearby the main path.
The genus name, Lanius, is derived from the Latin word for "butcher", and some shrikes are also known as "butcher birds" because of their feeding habits, where they impale prey on spikes and apparently keep them for later, or use them to attract mates (although there is some discussion around this).
