The day-flying false tiger moth is a widespread inhabitant of Hong Kong. Often seen late Autumn, sometimes in great numbers, along forest trails. This one I saw in Tai Po Kau in early september 2023. I had seen this behaviour before where they seem thirsty and they dip into water... this one landed in water then climbed out....the light was already going as i got this shot at 500mm
then he splashed back into the pond
i moved to flash to light the subject better, holding it above, which also gave a view into the water and you can see the fish behind waiting his chance to have a nibble....
But then one of the voracious water striders (Limnogonus fossarum) shot across and plunged its straw like proboscis into its victim... like watching a leopard on the plains of Africa in minature.....
here is a close shot
and closer, as it moved and fed....
i dropped down to almost water level for this side view.....
Meal finished the strider left, moth still apparently alive. But soon to be finished off by the waiting fish.
Here is a close up...look at his rostrum that he feeds with, seen clearly here.
As mentioned, i had seen this behaviour before...
It was interesting that this one i found in Mai Po flew down to the water several times, and seemingly dipped its wings. Perhaps a butterfly or insect expert can let us know why it was doing this?
