an Eagle in Hong Kong

Eagles in Hong Kong. Mai Po marshes nature reserve is a great place to see eagles as they migrate....and I was lucky to see this special guest, the endangered and vulnerable eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca). I do hope I can see more this year.....

These photos were taken mid November .

There are two different birds here, at least, with the one below a Juvenile with different wing markings

Worldwide the eastern imperial eagle is listed as vulnerable,. The usual suspects of habitat loss and prey depletion play a big part in endangering the species, but more direct threats from humans are often cited.

These birds are nomadic. They hitch a ride on the dramatic migrations of gentler birds, picking them off, as predators do. In Mai Po they have ducks and egrets and other birds to provide their feasts.

Here you can see the distinctive heavy feathered legs of a big eagle.

Here is one being bombed/mobbed by a black kite

ohhhh, whats above me...?

talons out.....

eagle ducks and the kites missed

Such a stunning sighting — seeing an Eastern Imperial Eagle in Hong Kong feels like one of those rare wildlife moments that reminds you how alive and surprising nature still is. I really loved how you captured not just the beauty of the bird, but also its behaviour, power, and vulnerability so naturally. The detail about the juvenile markings and the black kite mobbing made it even more fascinating to read. Honestly, posts like this are such a refreshing break from the usual screen-heavy routine where people only think about deadlines, stress, and whether to pay for assignments just to keep up. This was a reminder to actually look up, slow down, and notice the wild world around us. Beautiful…
