Small lizards along the forest paths.

March 26, 2019

On most forest walks you will hear the leaf litter rustle and small skinks will shoot away form where they were hunting or basking along the path.  These are probably either the Brown forest skink, or the Slender forest skink, which are not always easy to tell apart.

The brown forest skink is stouter and prefers riparian forest ( wooded area of land adjacent to a body of water ), and can be seen basking on stream banks and rocks. Tai Po Kau is a great place to see many of these.
The Slender Forest skink (see in this picture) meanwhile is much happier on forest paths, among leaf litter. Its thin black dorsolateral line extends to its tail.
