Did you know we had wild Canaries in Hong Kong?

well, we do. So now you know. And so do I.

I was standing taking photos of a magpie when i took these shots of this lovely little bird. I asked the knowledgable birder next to me, and he identified it as a yellow-fronted canary (Crithagra mozambica), also called Yellow-eyed Canary, which is in the finch family. This was later confirmed by Abdel and John Allcock, birder pros.

This bird is a resident breeder in Africa south of the Sahara Desert..as its latin name suggests, .but somehow they make their way to give us a viewing pleasure. This one i saw just last week outside of Mai Po wetlands.
