Many insects are famous for their sounds. Crickets, grasshoppers, and katydids all make quite a bit of noise, and the Cicadas can be deafening, in large swarms.
Many beetles produce sounds, too. Deathwatch beetles bang their heads again the walls of their wood tunnels, making a surprisingly loud knocking sound.
But did you know that some beetles stridulate, particularly when handled by humans? This can sound like a quite loud squealing, or chirping. Like from this Long-horn beetle that Adam saved, as he pulled it out of a water catchment, more like a mouse than a beetle...and it can be quite surprising if you have not heard it before.
Here he is, drying off on a branch, making a full recovery, after a narrow escape and a lot of squealing!
