Have you ever seen a huge, giant black bodied, purply winged hornet thingey, with a large orange head, and two big black eyes and antennae? It is in fact a Scoliid wasp, or a mammoth solitary wasp. A fearsome looking thing...here a video of one bumbling about.
I posted back in May about one I found in the very early morning in Lions Park, whilst it was raining. so I set up my macro rig, leaned into the manual focus, took a quick shot and scarpered; these are its wings in close up.
