The Great egret

The great egret (Ardea alba) is also known as the common egret, large egret or (in the Old World) the great white heron.
And yes, it is that time of the year again when they can be found in profusion in their nesting areas, and one is just by Tai Po market.
Apart from its larger size, the great egret can be distinguished from other white egrets by its yellow bill, pale face, and black legs and feet.
Here is a typical example.

BUT its never that easy for ID, as always these birds change, and the bill may become darker, even black, and the lower legs lighter, and the face can turn bright blue in the breeding season. Here is a typical example shot earlier this week.
