Spring has sprung, the grass has ris,
I wonder where dat birdy is?
the bird is on the wing, but dats absurd,
as everyone knows, the wing is on the bird.

Does anyone remember that little gem for their childhood>?
Well, this week I will posting about my adventures in the wetlands and mountains of Utah in the good old USA......and first up
“conk-la-ree!” So even while the trees are bare, the breeding season has already started in the marsh and Spring is announced loud and clear.

and I heard this loud and clear as i drove around Bear valley creek from a Red-winged Blackbird. which have migrated north weeks ahead of most songbirds, returning as soon as daylight length and thawing wetlands told them insects would soon follow.

This is a loud territorial declaration.
Those red shoulder patches aren’t decoration. They’re a warning as they flash them at rivals and sing from the highest perch they can find - in this case mainly reeds. Females arrive later.
When they do, they choose the males who held territory first and held it longest. so chirp as loud as you can little bird!
