Kung Fu Praying Mantis



The movement and speed of the preying mantis as inspired many myths, stories, and superstitions.  For centuries, praying mantises have been a staple of some styles of martial arts that mimic their fluidity.  Southern Praying Mantis style is one particular mantis kung fu style that originated in Southern China.


Here some recently hatched juveniles explore their new world.... Each praying mantis egg case will hatch about 100 tiny mantises, all at once. In order to hatch they'll need several weeks of warm weather, so they can "sense" the right time and that insects for food are abundant. Once hatched, praying mantis begin feeding on small insects, such as aphids. Later on, they'll continue advancing up to larger and larger prey.
