The Jay. Garrulus glandarius
The Eurasian Jay. Garrulus glandarius The Jay - a latin name that may indicate how noisy these big birds can be.... Garrulus glandarius.
These are the most colourful members of the crow family, Jays are famous for their acorn feeding habits - and also sweet chestnuts as these photos show.... and in the autumn you may see them burying acorns and other nuts for retrieving later in the winter. They can be quite rapacious, raiding the nests of smaller birds and often quarrelling with squirrels. Note these birds in the photo are in the UK, not in Hong Kong. Chat GTP/AI research says they are very scarce in Hong Kong, and David Diskin wrote of a sighting in November 2018..and comments "A Eurasian Jay was at Sha Lo Tung on 23rd. This species used to be resident - albeit scarce and local - in the central and northeast New Territories up until the turn of the century, but there have been very few records since then".
