If anyone said that there was an insect with a skull on it.....well, then you have to think of one of the scariest movies of all time - The Silence of the Lambs.
And that was where many were introduced to this wonderful Greater death's-head hawkmoth.
Adam and I found this one near midnight up on the hills of SaiKung in late October.
The common name refers to the human skull-shaped pattern of markings on the thorax....unfortunately this has been somewhat rubbed off on this otherwise stunning - and very large nocturnal moth.
